Holiday Crafts for Preschoolers

Boy, oh boy, have we been busy lately! I seem to have caught a crafting bug— I blame Pinterest. I went on looking for a pancake recipe, and four hours later, I emerged with a plethora of Christmas-y crafts for Piggle and I to do!

I think the most popular one floating around is the salt-dough ornaments. For those of you not aware of them, they’re the easiest thing in the world. You cannot fuck these up!

All you need is:

1/2 Cup all-purpose flour
1/2 Cup salt
1/4-ish Cup water

It is a really inexact art. Add the water in small amounts to start. It should end up feeling like playdoh and shouldn’t be sticky. Just play around with it.

Roll out your dough, toss some cookie cutters at your little one, and let them go to town! I usually give Piggle a small batch of his own to frig with while I make the more gift-able ornaments beside him.

Toss those puppies onto a baking sheet and bake for 4 hours at 200°F. I flip mine over at the 3 hour mark. Depending on how thick or thin they are, you may need to adjust the time. I’ve had one batch in the oven for 6 hours now!

Piggle and I are slightly addicted to these. We’ve made at least a hundred! The possibilities are endless. We did the basic hand/footprints, but I also let Piggle attack the dough with his playdoh shapes. I’ve got everything from Christmas trees to chickens.

The day after we make a batch, we get to paint them! This makes for one helluva mess, but it occupies the shit out of Piggle for hours! He’s even learning to paint things in the colors they’re supposed to be (I.e. green for trees), rather than slopping paint on all willy-nilly. Of course, he still does that, too. He hasn’t quite grasped the concept of not mixing the paints.

He’s always so proud of each one, and he makes a point of telling me who is getting which ornament for Christmas.

I’m definitely dreading the end of the holiday season because I’ll no longer have a legitimate reason to make these, but both Piggle and I really love it!

We’ve hit up the dollar store for more craft supplies over the past two weeks, and I’ll have more details for you another day. Miss Sequel is having none of this Mommy-downtime business, what with her teeth coming in at warp-speed and all…

More Ramblings You May Enjoy:

  1. Maybe you can’t fuck them up but I certainly can!

  2. What a great idea! Such a cheap and fun project, thanks for sharing.
